4 Days Coastal Safari to Lamu Island and Malindi

Experience Swahili Culture, Coastal Charm, and Serenity by the Indian Ocean

Tour Description

This 4 days safari takes you to the serene and culturally rich coastal towns of Lamu Island and Malindi — two of Kenya’s most captivating Indian Ocean destinations. Starting in Lamu, you’ll explore the island’s historical streets, visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and experience traditional Swahili life, with dhow cruises and beach walks.

You’ll then transfer to Malindi, where you’ll enjoy white sandy beaches, the famous Vasco da Gama Pillar, the historic Gede Ruins, and the beautiful marine park. The tour combines rich history, cultural immersion, and laid-back coastal relaxation, ideal for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility along the Kenyan coast.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lamu Island – Cultural Walking Tour & Sunset Dhow Cruise

Upon arrival in Lamu via flight or boat from Manda Island, you will be transferred to your hotel in Lamu Old Town. After check-in, enjoy a guided cultural walking tour through the narrow, car-free alleyways of the town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover Swahili architecture, local markets, mosques, and ancient coral-stone buildings.

In the evening, relax with a traditional dhow cruise at sunset, sailing around Lamu Island and enjoying the peaceful coastal breeze. Dinner and overnight at a beachfront guesthouse or boutique hotel.

Day 2: Shela Beach Visit – Transfer to Malindi

After breakfast, take a morning stroll or boat ride to the stunning Shela Beach. Enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or relaxing on the pristine sand dunes. Later in the day, depart Lamu and transfer to Malindi (via flight or road depending on preference and logistics). On arrival, check in at your beach resort and enjoy a relaxed evening by the ocean. Dinner and overnight stay in Malindi.

Day 3: Malindi Exploration – Gede Ruins and Marine Park

Begin your day with a visit to the historic Gede Ruins, a 13th-century Swahili town surrounded by forest and mystery. Then head to the Malindi Marine National Park, where you can snorkel or take a glass-bottom boat ride to view vibrant coral reefs and marine life. Later, stop by the Vasco da Gama Pillar and enjoy a seafood lunch at a beachfront restaurant.

Spend your afternoon relaxing at the beach or visiting local shops and art galleries. Dinner and overnight at your beach hotel.

Day 4: Malindi to Nairobi or Mombasa – Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and some final moments by the beach. Depending on your departure schedule, you can take a short morning walk along the shore or visit a nearby local market for souvenirs. You’ll then be transferred to the airport or SGR station for your return journey to Nairobi or Mombasa, marking the end of your coastal safari adventure.
