2 Days Historical Safari to Lord Egerton Castle and Kariandusi Prehistoric Site – A Journey Through Kenya’s Colonial and Prehistoric Past

Tour Description:

Embark on a captivating 2-days historical safari that takes you through two of Kenya’s most iconic heritage destinations — Lord Egerton Castle and the Kariandusi Prehistoric Site. This unique journey is a perfect blend of colonial history and ancient human civilization, offering travelers an enriching experience just a few hours from Nairobi.

Nestled in Nakuru County, Lord Egerton Castle is a grand architectural masterpiece built by Lord Maurice Egerton in the early 20th century. With its elegant design, lavish interiors, and romantic yet tragic backstory, the castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the colonial lifestyle and British aristocracy in Kenya. Not far from the castle lies the Kariandusi Prehistoric Site, one of the first archaeological sites discovered in East Africa. Here, visitors walk in the footsteps of early humans and explore artifacts dating back nearly a million years.

This safari is ideal for students, researchers, history lovers, or any traveler with a thirst for cultural exploration and ancient history. Enjoy guided tours, scenic drives through the Great Rift Valley, and overnight relaxation in a comfortable countryside lodge — all while learning more about Kenya’s deep-rooted heritage.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Nairobi to Lord Egerton Castle – Colonial Grandeur Unfolds

Your historical journey begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or residence in Nairobi by our professional driver-guide. After a short briefing, we will set off at 7:30 AM and enjoy a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley, with a brief stop at the viewpoint for breathtaking photos.

We arrive at Lord Egerton Castle in Nakuru around midday. You’ll be taken on a guided tour of the castle and its expansive grounds. Discover the sad yet fascinating story of Lord Egerton’s unrequited love that led him to build this grand mansion — a story that continues to stir curiosity among many visitors. Walk through the ornately furnished rooms, lavish halls, and quiet gardens as you are transported back in time.

After the castle tour, we will have a delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant before checking in at your lodge or guesthouse in Nakuru. You’ll have time to relax and enjoy dinner later in the evening, followed by an overnight stay.

Day 2: Kariandusi Prehistoric Site – Tracing the Footsteps of Early Humans

After breakfast, we head to Kariandusi Prehistoric Site, located near Lake Elementaita. This renowned archaeological site was discovered by Louis Leakey in the 1920s and features stone tools, fossils, and remains that reveal the life of early humans. With the guidance of a site expert, you’ll explore the museum, ancient excavation pits, and the nearby hot springs, which add natural charm to this historical site.

Later, we’ll enjoy lunch in a local spot, followed by a relaxed drive back to Nairobi in the afternoon. We expect to arrive in the city by early evening, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or preferred location, marking the end of a rich and eye-opening safari.
