2 Days Hiking Safari to Mount Elgon National Park
- Tour Description:
Embark on an adventurous 2-days hiking safari to Mount Elgon, Kenya’s second-highest volcanic mountain and one of East Africa’s hidden gems. Located along the Kenya-Uganda border, Mount Elgon National Park is famous for its dramatic scenery, ancient lava caves, and unique ecosystem. This short trek is perfect for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventurers seeking a rewarding yet manageable climb without the crowds of more popular mountains like Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro. The hike offers scenic views of montane forest, bamboo zones, moorlands, and rocky cliffs, while the rich biodiversity includes colobus monkeys, antelope species, over 300 bird species, and even elephants that visit the caves to mine salt.
- Itinerary:
- Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Elgon National Park – Kitum Cave Hike
Depart Nairobi early in the morning for a scenic drive to Mount Elgon National Park (approximately 7–8 hours). Arrive in time for lunch at the lodge or campsite near the park entrance. After check-in, proceed on a guided afternoon hike to the famous Kitum Cave, one of the most iconic lava tube caves in Africa, known for its salt-mining elephants. Along the trail, enjoy views of dense forest, wildlife, and birdlife. Return in the evening to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight rest.
Accommodation: Self-contained bandas or campsite inside the park.
- Day 2: Morning Hike to Endebess Bluff – Return to Nairobi
Enjoy an early breakfast, then embark on a morning hike to Endebess Bluff, one of the most scenic viewpoints in the park. The trail ascends gently through montane forest and moorland, offering panoramic views over the Trans-Nzoia plains and the Great Rift Valley.
