2 Day Safari Adventure to Shaba National Reserve

This 2-day safari adventure to Shaba National Reserve takes you to one of Kenya’s most scenic and less-explored wildlife destinations. Located in northern Kenya, adjacent to Buffalo Springs and Samburu National Reserves, Shaba is known for its stunning semi-arid landscapes, volcanic formations, and diverse wildlife. The reserve was the setting for the famous film Born Free, based on the life of Joy Adamson and her conservation efforts for lions and cheetahs. The safari offers an opportunity to see unique wildlife species, including the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Shaba National Reserve (Scenic Drive & Afternoon Game Drive)

Depart from Nairobi in the morning and enjoy a scenic drive through central Kenya, passing lush farmlands and rolling hills before entering the arid landscapes of northern Kenya. Upon arrival at Shaba National Reserve, check in to your lodge or tented camp and enjoy a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive, where you will:

Explore the rugged landscapes, acacia woodlands, and Ewaso Ng’iro River

Spot the Samburu Special Five, including the reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra

Look out for big cats such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs

Observe crocodiles and hippos along the riverbanks

Enjoy breathtaking views of volcanic formations, rocky hills, and open savannah

Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay, with an optional night game drive to spot nocturnal animals such as hyenas, genets, and aardwolves.

Day 2: Morning Safari & Return to Nairobi

Wake up early for a morning game drive, the best time to witness predators in action and catch wildlife in the golden sunrise light. Explore key areas of the reserve, including:

Joy Adamson’s former campsite, where she raised the famous lioness Elsa

Birdwatching along the Ewaso Ng’iro River, home to kingfishers, sunbirds, and hornbills

Large elephant herds moving through the bushland

Cheetahs hunting in the open plains

After an exciting morning, return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out. Depart for Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
